Banana as Geographical Indication

Applications for Banana as GI were filed by the states of Karnataka and Tamilnadu, and all these bananas (Nanjanagud Banana, Virupakshi Hill Banana, Sirumalai Hill Banana Kamalapur Red Banana) had been Registered Geographical Indication. The credit goes to the two states i.e. Tamil Nadu state (for 2 applications) and Karnataka state (for 2 applications) to have taken the initiative for filing the applications.

1. An Application for Geographical Indications as Nanjanagud Banana (Application No-35) was filed on 31st March, 2005 in Class 31 (Agricultural goods) by Department of Horticulture, Govt. of Karnataka, Biotechnology Centre, Bangalore. Now Nanjanagud Banana is a registered Geographical Indications in India.


2. An Application for Geographical Indications as Virupakshi Hill Banana (Application No-124) was filed on 12.5.2008 in Class 31 (Agricultural goods) by Tamil Nadu Hill Banana Growers Federation, Dindigul District of Tamil Nadu. Now Virupakshi Hill Banana is a registered Geographical Indications in India.


3. An Application for Geographical Indications as Sirumalai Hill Banana (Application No-126) was filed on 22.5.2008 in Class 31 (Agricultural goods) by Tamil Nadu Hill Banana Growers Federation, Dindigul District of Tamil Nadu. Now Sirumalai Hill Banana is a registered Geographical Indications in India


4. An Application for Geographical Indications as Kamalapur Red Banana (Application No-133) was filed on 04.09.2008 Class 31 (Agricultural goods) by Director of Horticulture, Department of Horticulture, Govt. of Karnataka, Biotechnology Centre, Bangalore. Now Kamalapur Red Banana is a registered Geographical Indications in India.

There is an increasing trend of GI applications filed and registrations granted over the years for agricultural goods. Out of the fourteen GI tags rewarded in the year 2009 – 2010 about five belong to Class-31. Kamalapur Red Banana is the recent one added in the list of bananas registered so far.
